Plavac Mali

By Paul Caputo

Plavac Mali is Croatia’s most iconic red grape variety. Grown throughout the country, it never disappoints consumers looking for big, bold, inky rich wines full of flavour, concentration, tannin, structure and power. Quite simply, Plavac Mali is not for the faint hearted.

Like many of the grapes originating from South West Europe it is vaguely related to the very old Tribidrag, a parent variety for many of the grapes we’ve come to know and love such as Primitivo or Kratosija.

There is also a little bit of Plavac Mali grown in Macedonia. Tikves Winery use a little of it to blend in their premium Barovo red wine.
