Domaine Mathias’s history dates back to 1894 when Antoine Charvet was awarded a diploma in winemaking for his white wine from the village of Chaintre. Marie-Magdeleine, one of the five girls of Antoine, married Claude Mathias and their son, Jean-Marie, runs the domain and starts to sell wines in “feuillettes” (small barrels of 110 litres) to the cafés and restaurants of Lyon. In 1914 Jean-Marie Mathias married Louise Morel and it is two of their children, Claudius and Jean, that continue to develop the both the vineyard and the business. In 1958, Jean begins to bottle the wines, leading to their sale direct from the domaine.
Currently, it is Gilles Mathias, son of Jean, who manages the domain with Béatrice, his wife. They farm around ten hectares split into various parcels located in different appellations. The most important are in Pouilly-Vinzelles AOC.
The key wine is Pouilly-Vinzelles AOC from the lieu-dit Les Longeays. It is made exclusively from Chardonnay and takes advantage of the vineyard’s more than fifty year old vines to produce a wine of depth and concentration.
