Touriga Franca is a red Portuguese grape variety that is increasingly popular with small producers in all regions of Portugal. Historically, the variety was cultivated in the Douro to add a touch of perfume to Port but today the same theory is being applied to some excellent Portuguese table wines.
Although few producers are confident enough to bottle Touriga Franca by itself, it is widely cultivated because of its ability to produce very floral wines alongside a robust, tannic structure with plenty of black fruit compote flavours. More often that not it will be found blended with Touriga Nacional.
