The Amedeo Custoza Superiore derives its name from Prince Amedeo of Savoia, who fought in 1866 near the Cavalchina estate during the Third Italian War of Independence; a memorial stone at Cavalchina marks the exact site. The history of the wine is deeply tied to the Piona family, whose grandfather Luciano established the winery in 1948. Luciano was also instrumental in making “Custoza” a recognised name: in 1962 Cavalchina was the first winery to put “Custoza” on the label, a move that helped distinguish the wine from neighbouring districts. Over subsequent decades, the family expanded the winery and pushed for the DOC status for Custoza; the Consorzio Tutela Vino Custoza was established in the early 1970s to safeguard the quality and reputation of wines like Amedeo.
