Established in 1995, Valle de la Orotava is a Denominación de Origen for wine on the island of Tenerife. Vines here extend from Puerto de la Cruz on the coast, to the lower slopes of Mount Teide where soils of volcanic matter, clay and rock dominate. The production of white wine is favoured in this area with Palomino the dominant variety, and, due to limited space on the island, innovative producers have developed a vine training system which involves braiding vine branches together. The industry here - although small and largely driven by demand from locals and tourists - is gradually improving in terms of quality.
