Taking its name from the Spanish for ‘under the mountains’, Somontano DO is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees in Spain’s Aragón region. In stark contrast to much of this arid region, the Somontano landscape is lush and green on account of its significant rainfall and abundant water systems. Red and white wines are permitted here from a variety of grapes such as, Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha, Merlot, Gewürztraminer, Macabeo and Chardonnay. Garnacha-based rosé (rosado) wines are also a staple of this region, whose offer is increasingly held in high regard.
