The Wine of Origin geographical unit Northern Cape covers a vast, sparsely populated region along the upper reaches of the Orange River, where viticulture depends heavily on irrigation in an otherwise arid landscape. Although less well known than the Western Cape, the area produces significant volumes of wine and grapes, particularly from vineyards planted along the river valley. Its hot climate and abundant sunshine favour ripe, fruit driven wines and high yielding vineyards.
